What’s Your Multipassionate Career Archetype?
If you’ve ever struggled to fit into a traditional career box, you’re not alone. It’s likely why you’re here.
Multipotentialites thrive when we’re allowed to explore different fields, connect ideas, and pursue more than one passion at a time – but it takes a lot of focus and clarity to take this less linear path. We can feel like we’re flaky or distracted or not committed when all we’re doing is being ourselves.
The thing is, even among multipotentialites, there’s no one-size-fits-all model for work and life. I’ve spent most of this year really analysing the different styles of multipotentionalites in my life, and trying to create a framework to help us understand ourselves better.
My multipotetionalite mother who has had six really distinct careers is a very different style of multipotentialite to my friend who is a professional writer and speaker, and is working on blending those things together.
Where I’ve landed is this simple, free quiz to help you figure out the best way to structure your career based on your unique strengths. You’ll discover whether you’re a Cocktail Career, a Baton Career, or a Pie Chart Career.
It’s currently in beta mode, and I would absolutely relish your feedback. Have a go, and then keep reading for a sneak peek of all three archetypes.
Which one resonates most with you?
The Cocktail Career: The Blended Expert
Snapshot:
As a Cocktail Career, you love mixing your skills, passions, and knowledge into one cohesive whole. You may feel pulled in multiple directions, but when you blend these diverse interests into a single business or job, they become more than the sum of their parts—like a well-crafted cocktail.
Traits: Integrative, curious, creative
Work Style: You thrive in interdisciplinary roles, where variety and novelty exist within one structured environment. You’re driven by curiosity but need some stability to keep things grounded.
Your Challenge: Balancing the need for both novelty and security.
Examples:
A classic example of this is someone who has a role like a Creative Director and gets to play in the worlds of illustration, photography and styling, as well as project management and communication.
But it’s not just for creatives. It could be a lawyer with a passion for property flipping who volunteers for a women’s shelter. Combined together, the ideal person to be tackling the community housing crisis, right?
Is This You?
Ask yourself:
Do I prefer working within one business or job, but need that role to encompass multiple facets and skillsets?
Do I feel fulfilled when I’m connecting ideas and building something cohesive out of different parts of myself?
The Relay Career: The Focused Sprinter
Snapshot:
The Relay Career thrives on diving deep into one interest or project for a period of time, then passing the baton when it's time to move on. You find joy in mastering an area of interest, but once you’ve reached a milestone or feel that you’ve “done enough,” you’re ready for the next thing.
Traits: Balanced, goal-oriented, open-minded
Work Style: You dedicate yourself fully to one project or role for months/years before switching to something else. You love becoming an expert, but often hit a point where you lose interest because you have reached a level of mastery.
Your Challenge: Finding the right time to move on without feeling like you’ve abandoned your progress.
Examples:
Someone who works on distinct projects – such as books or films – may relate to the Relay Career. Although they could also identify more with the Cocktail Career (above).
More commonly, a Relayer has very different careers following on from one another – a stint as a scuba diver before a career as a stockbroker before leaving to start a nonprofit, and then a few years consulting… etc.
Is This You?
Ask yourself:
Do I love focusing deeply on one project, then move on to something completely new?
Do I work best in bursts of intensive focus followed by periods of rest or transition?
The Pie Chart Career: The Master of Many
Snapshot:
You’re the classic multipotentialite—the one who thrives on variety, switching between multiple projects or roles at once. Crucially, you find energy in balancing many things at once (it’s not just a necessity to make enough money). For you, a career is like a pie chart, divided into various interests that constantly change.
Traits: Energetic, dynamic, adaptable
Work Style: You’re constantly juggling several interests or jobs, and that’s where you thrive. The thought of doing just one thing sounds limiting, and your ability to balance is your superpower.
Your Challenge: Managing time and focus while juggling multiple passions.
Examples:
I am a typical Pie Charter. Currently my Pie Chart is made up of:
running a business with my partner in the wine industry
consulting on marketing and business operations for a small local business
starting An Extraordinary Life as a Substack, Instagram and soon a series of small minicourses
Is This You?
Ask yourself:
Do I feel happiest when I’m working on several disparate projects or roles simultaneously?
Does the idea of narrowing down to just one of these feel limited and lacklustre?
