Wanderlist: Majorca Martini Suite, Melbourne
A post dedicated to Art Deco books, music, furniture and home decor.
I have several reasons to visit Melbourne again soon – one of which is simply because it’s an incredible city – and I am promising myself that when I do, I will stay at the Majorca Martini Suite.
Oh look, another martini reference.
Completed in 1929, the Majorca Building in Flinders Lane is a magnificent neo-Romanesque building designed by Harry Norris, one of the first Australia architects to introduce Art Deco to major commercial projects. (Although at the time, the style was just referred to as “moderne” – historians didn’t christen it as Art Deco until its revival in the 1960s.)
So much of the detail remains: the blue faience tiles, the gold leaf-shaped and rope ornamental mouldings, the original steel windows, the opulent entry foyer and staircase featuring terrazzo tiling and marble…
With its crystal, its Chesterfield sofa, its chandeliers and its palm trees, the Majorca Martini Suite is an ode glamour and attention to detail.
