Let's shake things up a bit!
There's some changes a-comin'. Read on to find out if your favourite bits will stay free!
Well, well, well, if it isn’t me breaking format.
I love a format. You may have noticed.
But I’ve been inspired recently to shake things up a bit around here, and finally put some of my more time-consuming, more thoughty thoughts into a paid subscription model.
There will still be freebies! Don’t fear.

A number of you have already pledged that you would pay for The Small Things, and that means the world. As an ex-mag editor and writer of almost 15 years, it’s taken a bit of experimenting and lots of thinking for me to work out what I want The Small Things to be and how it can add value to this community.
I love the curatorial element of TST, so I want to bring in some new “columns” each month for you to look forward to, as well as play with some new formats. A podcast! An online monthly meet-up! A PRINT VERSION!?
All with the intention of reminding you that it’s the small things that create an extraordinary life.
As a current reader, I’d love to gift you a month of paid subscription, worth a whopping $8! Think of it as a no-obligations test drive of this new format. In October, you’ll then get the option to drop back down to a free subscription or stay on as a paid subscriber for the full shebang. There will also be ways to claim free months for referring other readers.
So thank you, thank you for being here! And I hope you’ll continued to be part of TST as we move into this next phase.
Right, off to create a moodboard for you x
What you can expect from here…
For all subscribers:
Monthly moodboard – each month I’ll kick off with a themed moodboard with a bunch of links that relate to that theme – could be playlists, things for your home, recipe ideas… You’ll see this first tomorrow (1 September).
Open Tabs – a lightly curated round-up of tabs that are sitting open on my laptop that for some reason I can’t quite let go. You know it’s going to get esoteric fast around here.
For paid subscribers:
Life Curriculum – the much-loved weekly curriculum section will become its own post once a week, and will be sent to paid subscribers each Sunday. I will elaborate on the suggestions more than I currently do.
Biased Guides – each month I’ll do a big round-up of everything I think you need to know about a particular lifestyley subject, starting in September with a guide to everything I think a fridge needs (ie. jars and jars of homemade confit garlic).
Other paid subscriber content – I have a few fun “columns” up my sleeve, which will start to come out this month too, and will just go to paid subscribers. As always, we’ll be talking about food, wine, cooking, restaurants, clothes, home decor, travel… all the good stuff.
Coming soon features:
Podcast – I’m currently playing around with some concepts for a private podcast! I’m tossing up between interviewing people about their own small things that they love, and finding a fun co-host that I speak to each week/fortnight.
Apéro Hour – I’m also playing around with what it would look like to do a live online apéro hour together each month. So we can pour ourselves a drink and have a chat about all the things we both love (if you’re here, I’m assuming you also love your food, home and travel).
Print mag/paper – I am a print tragic, and the idea of turning TST into some kind of limited edition print production twice a year is proving too tempting. I’m still working out exactly what this could be, but paid subscribers would get a benefit here – a free copy for annual subscribers, I think, and free postage for monthly subscribers. To be confirmed!
Too long, didn’t read…
The Small Things format will change from this month
Life Curriculum will become a paid feature, coming out each Sunday
You can receive a month of free access for all of September
An extraordinary life is created in the small things. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.
